Samuel Bowen Samuel Bowen

A member of Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador from 2003-2006, Sam Bowen began acting in the seventh grade and has since been cast in number of theatrical productions, including Sleeping Beauty, The Insanity of Mary Girard and most recently Scene It!

Sam attended Stage Head Academy in the summer of 2005 and made his made his first television appearance in Life with Derek later that year. The following year Sam moved to St. John's to study the International Baqueloreate program at Holy Heart of Mary High School. He also helped teach and run the Grosse Morne Academy Drama Club. After high school Sam plans to study journalism and dreams of one day of becoming a movie producer and/or cinematographer. Off stage, Sam acts like a playful goof, attentive brain and creative visionary.

Sam is a member of For the Love of Learning's Drama Workshop and wore several hats in Homeless Like Me.


James Burke

James is always welcome at For the Love of Learning, thanks to his easy going and friendly personality. He does any and everything he can at the centre to help others and is always up for fun whenever he drops by.
James has accomplished many goals in his life, including becoming the first Newfoundland and Labrador performer to train at the illustrious Jonglieren Katakomben in Berlin, Germany. He is also set to perform in the 2010 Cultural Olympics in Vancouver with Wonderbolt.

Peter Duchemin Peter Duchemin

Peter is a local magician, philosopher, and entrepreneur with a background in stage and circus performance. As an apprentice of well-known local clown Beni Malone, Peter performed three consecutive summers with Beni's Wonderbolt Circus Show. After receiving his Masters of Philosophy degree in Humanities at MUN, he decided to launch his own company: Abracadrabra Magical Theatre. His shows are infused with myths, ideas, and mysteries. His theatre's main production, The Abracadabra Illusion Show opened to sold out audiences in April 2007 and is back by popular demand early this July. (Better watch close or you'll miss it!) Karyn Dwyer Karyn Dwyer

This Newfoundland native has played a diverse array of roles in over 45 independent films and TV projects. She is best known for starring in 'Better Than Chocolate' which won numerous awards at international film festivals, and earned Karyn a loyal fan following. Other credits include the Canadian cult classic 'Boozecan' (1994), opposite David Cronenberg and 'Lorne Michael's Superstar', with Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell (1999). She later gave gritty performances for the Bravo network in 'Pony' and 'Dying Like Ophelia' by two time Governor General Award-winning playwright, Judith Thompson. Karyn also appeared in over 16 stage productions, including critically acclaimed 'Suffragette Koans' in LA, and in Toronto Native Earth's 'Romeo and Juliet', Eric Bogosian's 'Suburbia', 'As You Like It' for the internationally acclaimed theater festival DuMaurier World Stage, and her one women show 'Bad Girls' at Toronto's The Rivoli.

After a productive term teaching film and theatre at For the Love of Learning, Karen has returned to Toronto to resume work in film in television.


Mikaela Dyke Mikaela Dyke

Mikaela has been kicking around the St. John’s film and theatre scene for a number of years now. Wildly celebrated for her tenacious bit parts and improv prowess, legend says she once spent a year doing a terrible TV show in Massachusetts. Her superpowers include: flying, singing loudly off key while driving, and aquatic telepathy. She has also been known to speak a billion languages (French, Russian, Japanese, Irish Gaelic, Spanish, Mandarin, German and Labrador Inuktitut) and edit videos.

Mikaela is a Peer Mentor at For the Love of Learning.


Kendall Flood Kendall Flood

Kendall is an experienced young entrepreneur. As co founder of the Newfoundland Bushman [www.newfoundlandbushman.com],a burgeoning and ambitious Newfoundland based adventure tourism initiative, Kendal and Dave Vere-Halloway are tracking and mapping out wilderness guides throughout virtually untouched parts of the province. An experienced woodsman, Kendall is certified in a plethora of safety courses and procedures. Well-versed in bushcraft, native Newfoundland flora and fauna, animal tracking, Kendall also boasts a collection of some of the best tracking and woodsman gear in the province.

Along with his partner Tracy, Kendall co-owned and operated Exotic Animal Rescue from 1997 until the birth of their son, Thade. The dynamic duo initiated thousands of in-house adoptions of abused, neglected or unwanted animals, including chinchillas, tarantulas, snakes, reptiles, hedgehogs, lizards and birds. Tracy and Kendall also met with reptile owners to teach proper husbandry, toured schools in the Avalon Eastern School Board and assisted vets with the diagnosis of exotic animals.

Kendall is also a trained fire breather and sword swallower, a constructer of Lorica Segmentata (roman armour) and a guest lecturer at the Memorial University Religious Studies department.


Tracy Flood Tracy Flood

Tracy Flood was the co founder of Exotic Animal Rescue. Along with her partner Kendall, Tracy co-owned and operated Exotic Animal Rescue from 1997 until the birth of their son, Thade. The dynamic duo initiated thousands of in-house adoptions of abused, neglected or unwanted animals, including chinchillas, tarantulas, snakes, reptiles, hedgehogs, lizards and birds. Tracy and Kendall also met with reptile owners to teach proper husbandry, toured schools in the Avalon Eastern School Board and assisted vets with the diagnosis of exotic animals.

Tracy has also volunteered with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, The Lions Den and Rabbittown Community Centre. Before becoming a Super Mom, Tracy also used to sing and play in a punk band, perform professional body piercing and modeling. Tracy has also worked as a Manager with a wireless communications company.

Tracy was the Production Manager of our debut theatrical production, Homeless Like Me., and a Youth Mentor with For the Love of Learning.

Nicole Goodyear Nicole Goodyear

Nicole is a trained Artist, Photographer, Writer and Graphic Designer. With a Graphic Production Technology Diploma from the College of the North Atlantic and an honours diploma in Enterprise Developing Entrepreneurial Skills, Nicole is adept with Adobe Photoshop, painting with acrylics, sketching and colouring with Prisma markers and leads. Nicole describes creative writing and art as the "traffic outlets for whatever unexpected events occur in her life and the powerful emotions that naturally follow…"

Nicole actively volunteers to help others in the community. Her volunteer resume includes: the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association, the St. Johns International Women's Film Festival, various senior citizens homes, the 2000 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, the Canadian Diabetes Association, the spectrum of local animal rights organizations, Pathfinders and Girl Guides of Canada.

Nicole’s interests include travelling, tropical fish and Asian culture. Nicole also enjoys swimming, having coffee with friends and spending time with her man.

Nicole was a Workshop Facilitator with the Art Workshop and a volunteer with the Drama Workshop at For the Love of Learning.


Kristina Gough Kristina Gough

Kristina aka Boogeyman Brand is sharp as a tack and has everyone's back. She writes killer poetry and loves helping animals, playing the guitar, and generally being silly when the urge comes over her. She is an active participant in the painting, writing and yoga/meditation classes, and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it. Her favorite snack at tea time is live rats and, for protein breaks, children’s feet. Perhaps due to this, Kristina says she's grown an extra set of eyes on her feet.

Determined to listen to the beat of her own drum, Kristina is a true artist and free spirit. We know Kristina will go very far with her own drum.


Robin Grant Robin Grant

A young entrepreneur, Robin has worked either full or part time as a Multimedia Writer and Producer with a variety of local, national and international clients for over a decade. A community activist and volunteer with older adults and at-risk and resilient youth, Robin has also worked as a university guest lecturer, columnist, a child care/family support worker, local radio reporter and national television correspondent. Robin is a former member of The Telegram's Community Editorial Board.

Robin enjoys thinking outside the box, playing the cello, her family (check out her sister Jenn's new album called Orchestra For the Moon), and most of all, championing the underdog.

Wes Grant Wes Grant

Wes is as humble as he is talented.

When asked what he considers some of his proudest achievements, Wes says his ability to “date girls without running for my life in the opposite direction” and being able to negotiate his way out of detention in school growing up.

Wes thrilled the crowd with his brilliant portrayal of Steve the Hobo in For the Love of Learning's latest production, "Messages of Hope." He also entertains everyone through the halls of For the Love of Learning with his beautiful piano playing. Wes is also an exceptionally talented vocalist, song writer and guitar player. He's even learning to play the glockenspeil (yes, that is a musical instrument).


Montgomery Hall Montgomery Hall

A Producer, Visual/New Media Artist in St. John's, Newfoundland, Montgomery paints his world loud. His leitmotiv is art in the street, accessible to all. Through schools, workshops and partnerships, he personifies the commitment of the artist to his community. In the past Montgomery has worked as Gallery Coordinator for Eastern Edge Gallery, Youth Producer for the national project Terminus1525 and as Assistant Producer for MediaJamtv.com. His work has been shown locally, nationally and internationally. Montgomery organized the first Newfoundland Graffiti Jam as well as Colour Our Community Mural Project and Freeways- a youth art magazine. Currently Montgomery sits on the Board of Directors for the Independent Artist Cooperative, Rock Can Roll Records and Edge Inter-Media. Montgomery is also working on a multi-media collaborative project with artists from Halifax and Sackville and the Independent Artist Cooperative (St. John’s) and was recently the peer mentor to 10 students through The Brother T. I. Murphy Centre Community Youth Arts Project.


Sarah Hannon Sarah Hannon

Sarah is a published poet, writer, editor and multimedia artist as well as a web designer and programmer. Sarah's interest in the arts began as a child and signs of precocious talent showed early in Creative Writing Workshops under the tutelage of Christine Hennebury, well-known freelance writer, feminist and member of Mount Pearl's Association for the Arts. Sarah also loves her pet rat, old school and new school Michael Jackson, her girlfriend Naomi and bacon.

Sarah was a Workshop Facilitator with the Writing, Multimedia and Arts Workshops at For the Love of Learning and currently volunteers with the Drama Workshop. Sarah is also a Founding Participating Member of For the Love of Learning.


Vincent Hannon Vincent Hannon

Vince has a flair for doing whatever he puts his mind to. A member of the St. John's Juggling Club for a year, Vince has done several circus performances including their debut performance as a club titled, Playtime. He has performed fire dancing and fire breathing at the annual St. John's Lantern Festival, as well as fire dancing and tech work in the film, Fire Side Studio with the Youth Community Arts Program. Other organizations with whom Vincent has done circus performances include: The Backdoor Cabaret at the LSPU Hall, The Arts Association of Mount Pearl Festival, The Annual Multicultural Festival, and volunteer performances at old ages homes. Vince has also taught the Star Wars inspired Light Saber Combat workshops to science fiction geeks at the recent Sci-fi on the rock.

An aspiring actor, Vince has performed in several shows, including the winner of best show at the Regional Amateur Drama Festival, Wheel of Justice in 2005, A Rockin' Time in The land of Rhyme, directed by Samantha Sullivan, and My Fair Lady, with Artistic Fraud in the 24-hour musical.

Vince's future plans include joining Wonderbolt Circus, the Katimivik program, and studying Juggling at Jonglier Katakomben in Berlin, Germany, then other schools for clowning and circus performance. Vince enjoys jazz, pick pocketing, hoola-hooping and hopes to travel.

Vince has volunteered with For the Love of Learning's Art Workshop as well as worked as a Workshop Facilitator with the Theatre Workshop, playing the lead in our debut performance, Homeless Like Me.


Laurel Anne Hasler Laurel Anne Hasler

Laurel Anne is employed as Project Manager of the Innu Language CURA (Community-University Research Alliance) project in the Linguistics Department at Memorial University, a project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. She has a Master's in English from Queen's and a Master's in Linguistics from Memorial. A true lover of learning, Laurel Anne's tutored students and new Canadians in linguistics and taught English as a second language. A self-determined globetrotter, Laurel Anne is fluent in French and Spanish and reads and writes German, Irish Gaelic, Swahili, Innu-aimun (spoken by the Innu), Latin and Ancient Greek. A past member of The Telegram's Community Editorial Board and active volunteer, Laurel Anne's also worked as a Dialect Coach for the feature film Young Triffie's Been Made Away With. A Scrabble sorceress and downhill skier who goes for the moguls, Laurel Anne’s biggest weakness is always trying to pick up the mood of curmudgeons and grumps.

Stephanie Haynes Stephanie Haynes

Armed with a gung-ho spirit of adventure, quick mind and bar-none sense of compassion, this single mom is destined to build a bright future for both herself and homeboy Kurtis. Resilient to boot, Stephanie could easily sell swamp land to a seasoned realtor (but alas her morals won’t let her) and break the sternest face in the crowd into a warm smile.. As a summer intern with Women Interested in Successful Employment (W.I.S.E.) in 2006, Stephanie has developed organizational policy and advertising campaigns, such as the W.I.S.E. programs’ Worker’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy, the W.I.S.E. Youth Recruitment Campaign and their Second Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser.

Passionate about learning, resourcefulness and giving away cake to hungry people (it’s true), Stephanie is set to begin a Business Management program at the College of the North Atlantic in the fall, and hopes to one day run her own business. Carefully saving away money for her schoolbooks, Stephanie is employed as the Promotion’s Representative at For the Love of Learning.


Nicole Hillier Nicole Hillier

Nicole is the leader of a Christian youth group at the Corner Stone Church and a Master Corporal with the .56 field engineer cadets. While she's a hardworking Tim Horton's employee, Nicole admits she prefers spicy Indian cuisine to fried dough any day. Trained in Standard First Aid, Nicole enjoys writing poetry, hanging out with her many real friends, playing glock and working as a peer substance abuse councillor. A perspicacious thinker and reader, you’d better be nice to the folks at who serve your double-double: you just can't say when you'll need an intelligent, church-going, first aid trained medic to save your ass.

Nicole is a member of For the Love of Learning's Theatre Workshop and a cast member of the production Homeless Like Me.


Sakurah Ashley Horwood Sakurah Ashley Horwood

Sakurah is a born in the bones artist with a strong interest in film, costume design, writing, art, and meditation. A free spirit and avid traveller, Sakurah has travelled widely and already lived in various locales across the country. Having picked cherries in Okanogan, British Columbia and worked with local cross-national media on a variety of film, television and web production alike, Sakurah decided to return home to St. John's, Newfoundland in 2005. Since coming home Sakurah's led meditation groups, forged a plan to attend art school and learn all she can about holistic medicine. Her favourite animal is a platypus and her favourite music is disco-tech, rock & roll and Mogwai.

Heather-Sara Labonté Heather-Sara Labonté

A young political scientist, thespian and entrepreneur, Heather is part owner of "Kidspiration Creative Learning," a local enrichment and education centre for children and youth. With more than a dozen local stage credits to her name, Heather is also an experienced belly dancer and plans to perform in Summerdance this August. Heather is also a fourth year history and political science student with plans to attend law school next year.

Heather was a member of For the Love of Learning's Drama Workshop.


Jonny Lewis Jonny Lewis

Jonny has been involved in community theatre since the age of five. He most recently portrayed 'Vince' in the Beothuk Street Players award-winning Buried Child. He has trained with Memorial University’s Performance and Communications Media Program, Rabbittown Theatre, Daniell Irvine, NIFCO, Ian Wallace, and has taken part in a plethora of theatre and film workshops. He is very proud and pleased to work with For the Love of Learning and offers his kudos to all those involved. Some little known side notes about Jonny are his distain for Texas Hold'em and UFC fighting. Meanwhile, Jonny thoroughly enjoys beets and sweet mustard pickles.

Currently co-founder of "Anti Entertainment," a new local film and theatre company, Jonny is also a Youth Mentor and was the Stage Manager for Homeless Like Me.


Kale Tyler William MacLean Kale Tyler William MacLean

Kale is an all-around advocate for the peers of his community. The Youth Representative on the St. John’s Community Advisory Committee on Homelessness, a frequently called on Youth Spokesperson for Choices for Youth, a Steering Committee member of the Community Youth Network, Kale has the bases covered. Kale has also used his media savvy to advocate for at-risk youth through several media venues, including the CBC radio and television, NTV, and as Youth Speaker with the Community Youth Network's CYN in the City fundraiser.

Highly articulate, gregarious and intelligent, Kale has lived nine lives and then some. As a preteen, he worked and toured with the carnival. As a young adult, he survived on the streets. Meanwhile, Kale has the mind of a cynic and the heart of an idealist. An avid reader and shrewd chess player, Kale effortlessly holds court with the best. Kale also loves cats, girls, Stephen King and amateur astronomy.

Kale was the Guest Host of For the Love of Learning's debut performance, Homeless Like Me and the inspiration for the script itself. Kale is also a member of For the Love of Learning's Steering Committee.


Peter McCann Peter McCann

Peter McCann has a mind like a steel trap, a heart like a bowl of Jell-O and a black belt in Kempo karate. Having trained for nearly a decade in gymnastics, Peter is ridiculously flexible. A natural and agile athlete, Peter is also a team player, trained in soccer, rugby, hockey and swimming. Peter’s interests include classical and Greek mythology, juggling, break dancing, fire manipulation and building forts. Peter also plays a mean "Hot Cross Buns" on the recorder.

Preston McCarthy Preston McCarthy

Preston is a Rap Artist, Published Poet and accomplished Sketch Artist and Painter. Preston enjoys basketball, hockey, skateboarding and collecting bling. A recovery drug user, Preston has a quick, resilient mind and enjoys delivering jokes and their comebacks. Preston also takes his responsibilities of independence, school and work seriously. His favourite rap artists include Eminem, Tu Pac and Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony. Preston aspires to become an Architectural Engineer.

Preston was a member of the Writing Workshop and the artistic director and logo designer of the Multimedia Production Workshop that produced the zine Voices for Youth. Preston was also Workshop Facilitator with both the Art and Drama Workshops, and has written the musical score, Rhapsody of Community, for For the Love of Learning's theatrical debut, Homeless Like Me. Preston is also a Founding Member of For the Love of Learning.


Chris Mullett Chris Mullett

Chris, aka "Spook" is an ambitious young man living with autism who has proven he can do just about anything he puts his mind to. Born in Toronto, Chris moved to Mount Pearl as a kid and St. John's in 2005. Chris has volunteered at the Harbour Haunt and was recognized as most valuable spook there many times. In 2007 he did a work program with the Murphy Centre. A represenatative with the St. John's Native Friendship Centre, he also has a Mikmaq heritage and recently attended the Pow Wow in the summer of 2008. He was also featured in the Victoria Park Lantern Festival as one of the giant lantern puppets. Chris is also a natural at acting. He played the Spooky Kid in For the Love of Learning's play "Messages of Hope" as well as Bold Hercules and Father Christmas our "Bold Champions: Soldiers Acting at Christmas." A gifted artist, Chris can draw with remarkable precision whatever he wants, and loves most to draw city buses. He was even featured on page one of The Telegram for creating the Christmas card titled "Confederation Building at Christmas Eve." A six pin killer, Chris can demolish anyone at bowling. He also enjoys swimming, bowling, hiking, picking up and learning to play nearly any musical instrument, and admits he's a BIT of a technophile.

Chris's future plans include attending College of the North Atlantic's Office Administration program and the 2009 Conne River Pow Wow.

Cassandra Noel Cassandra Noel

Cassandra is a compassionate, gutsy young woman who delights in opening minds and challenging convention. An active sportsman for the past several years, Cassandra is a maverick basketball and baseball team player. Cassandra is also a technophile who enjoys taking apart anything with wires attached, and in particular, fixing her friend's computers pro bono. A Youth Representative with Stella Burry Community Services, Cassandra has also been a member of cadets and loves fruit, genuine people, hawt women and pizza with no olives.


Evelyn Osbourne Evelyn Osbourne

Evelyn Osborne has been playing violin since she was five. With a love for new and experimental musics Evelyn enjoys improvising and composing for cross-genre artists (actors, magicians, film, circus and visual artists). Evelyn holds an undergraduate degree in violin and a Master's degree in Canadian Studies. She is currently a PhD candidate and doctoral fellow in Ethnomusicology at Memorial. Evelyn's research centers on the instrumental traditions in Newfoundland and Labrador specifically how they interact with Irish and Celtic musics. Evelyn is the Artistic Director of the Suzuki Talent Education Program in St. John's which teaches children as young as three to play string instruments.

Joey Pyan Joey Pyan

Charlotte Reid Charlotte Reid

Charlotte is a young entrepreneur and a graduate of the Costume Studies program at Dalhousie University and the ringleader of all local fashionistas.

Charlotte's work portfolio includes Trailer Park Boys, How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days and Wise Girls, as well as a plethora of local film and theatre projects, including Hatching Matching and Dispatching, Random Passage and Mary Walsh's remount of High Steel. In 2003 Charlotte also launched Charlottestreet, her own fashion design company. Charlotte is also a dedicated and seemingly tireless community volunteer.

Adam Roberts Adam Roberts

Adam has been active in the arts since he was a wee sprout. A member of the Senior Drama Society at Holy Heart of Mary High School, Adam has already appeared in two independent films: Hecktor in Hiding and Lucy, played "Nathan Wimberly" in Murder at the Banquet, performed in the Kittiwake Dance Studio's production of The Nutcracker and participated in Pope Productions' Clay Animation Workshop, soon to be televised nationally on behalf of the National Film Board of Canada. Adam also enjoys graffiti art, painting, air brushing, sculpting, sketching and plays a mean bass and air guitar.


Jeff Rose Jeff Rose

Jeff is an accomplished musician who has been a member of several bands over the years, including many he formed himself. Some of the bands he lists as his personal favourites are Cider Squadron, Fingrinn and Rum Katastrophe. Jeff has provided the vocals and drums work for each of these groups. Since he began coming to For the Love of Learning, Jeff has shown he’s a true friend who always has his buddy’s back and has demonstrated he doesn’t judge anyone, no matter their circumstances. He enjoys skateboarding, playing with his punk band and moshing with 70-year-old men.


Barry (Stretch) Sauve

Barry is always ready and willing to lend a hand at For the Love of Learning. Whether it’s a play like Spare Some Change or helping to set up the centre for a workshop, Stretch is prepared to help out.
“I’m just an average guy trying to better myself,” he says.
Stretch says the fact he is still alive and has great kids are two major accomplishments and adds he is proud that he competed in the 1988 Alberta Winter Games in bowling. In his spare time, Stretch enjoys watching movies, hanging out friends and helping people.


Doug Smith Doug  Smith

Doug has worked as an Accountant, Statistician and Bookkeeper. He has also tutored math, as well as voluntarily assisted mentally challenged students and worked as a live-in childcare worker. Currently a member of CHANNEL, Doug actively helps to initiate several social wellness projects in the community. A former member of the School Lunch Association, Doug has also assisted in performing puppet shows for Noodle Kids Incorporated. Doug is a fundamentally good guy and quick to lend a hand on any project he cares about.

Ivan Snow Ivan Snow

Ivan Snow is a trained and published creative writer, with precocious ability in the arts. A talented poet, short story writer and artist, Ivan draws on a collection of unique life experience and keen observations of the world. A man who enjoys to both think and live outside the box, Ivan was "born in a tree" in Gander, Newfoundland. Ivan enjoys role-playing and all types of music, including goth metal and rock & roll. A thoughtful person who fools many with his edgy appearance and obscure non-sequiturs, Ivan would give the shirt off his back to anyone. Ivan's plans for the future include building on his writing portfolio and skills, and publishing more of his work. He hopes to one day become a social worker.

Ivan was a member of the Writing Workshop, Art Workshop and Drama Workshop with For the Love of Learning.


Emmanuel Steves Emmanuel Steves

Emmanuel has been exploring the world independently since the age of thirteen. From the abandoned auto yards of Michigan to the sunshine state of Georgia, to the orchards of the Annapolis Valley and the forests of the Charlotte Islands, Emmanuel has already survived more than his fair share of twists and turns. He also designs tattoos, plays the harmonica and the tin whistle and reads—a lot. Emmanuel cites Robert Service as among his favourite poets. He can also make some pretty sweet balloon animals.

Emmanuel is a resilient youth and the Operations Manager at For the Love of Learning.


Angel Strong Angel Strong

Angel enjoys spending time with the people who mean the world to her. She loves watching movies, going on adventures and having deep conversations. She also takes every opportunity to go for long walks on the beach.
On her 21st birthday, Angle won a game in the world indoor rugby tournament and for the past eight years has been taking part in many theatre productions. She was the stage manager for Messages of Hope.

Alexandria Sullivan Alexandria Sullivan

At the ripe age of seven, Alex began acting classes with Patricia Andrews at the Arts and Culture Centre and hasn't looked back. She has since worked on various productions at the Arts and Culture Centre basement theatre (main stage sweep the decks) and the LSPU Hall. She has also been active in musical theatre with the Kiwanis Festival and central to theatrical productions with the Holy Heart of Mary Drama Club. Alex's future plans include going to university to qualify to become an English and Theatre teacher.

Alex also enjoys reading, soccer, drawing, writing and music, and eating ketchup on just about everything.

Alex was also the brainchild behind a fundraiser for Homeless Like Me at her high school, Holy Heart of Mary.


Naomi Ubank Naomi Ubank

A resilient youth having just moved here all the way from England, Naomi is a professionally-trained dark room photographer and filmmaker. Naomi also enjoys nature, music, long baths and spending time with her partner Sarah. A quiet, thoughtful young woman, when Naomi speaks you best listen... gorgeous accent aside.

Naomi has been a volunteer with the workshops and is also For the Love of Learning's Resident Photographer.


Dave Vere-Holloway Dave Vere-Holloway

A young entrepreneur, Dave is the co-founder of Newfoundland Bushman. An avid outdoorsman, trained mountain biker, kayaker and Newfoundland woodsman, Dave has also chaperoned overnight Duke of Edinburgh hikes in the province. Dave also works as a full time freelance Web and Graphic Designer. His clients include the provincial government as well as a variety of retail and not-for-profit organizations. Dave has a Bachelor of Science degree for Memorial University.

Dave was hired by Memorial University to teach basic computer and research skills to elementary school kids in a summer camp through the linkway program. He also tutors elementary and junior high school students in math, french and science, and enjoys playing the piano.


Vanessa Mary Wade Vanessa Mary Wade

Vanessa is a graduate of the Textile Studies Program from the Anna Templeton Centre at the College of the North Atlantic. Renowned for her skill in natural and chemical fabric dye techniques, Vanessa won a Millennium Scholarship in 2007. Along with a deep love of art, including textiles, writing and photography, Vanessa enjoys anything related to music, whether it’s playing the bass guitar, maracas, tambourines or harmonica, collecting tapes, cd’s and vinyl, or just cheering one of her many favourite local bands. Vanessa also adores Purity fancy biscuits, old black and whites movies from the twenties and thirties, and drinking lots and lots of tea.

Vanessa is a member of For the Love of Learning and currently a participant in both the Writing and Art Workshops.

Renée Walsh Renée Walsh

A level two student with Prince of Wales Collegiate, Renée has volunteered as an actor with the Halloween Harbour Haunt in St. John’s for the past four years. Meanwhile Renée enjoys all the performing arts, especially music and singing. An active soccer player and loyal friend, Renée prides herself on her mean soccer kick and tried and true friendships. Renée also loves monkeys, the movie The Virgin Suicides and pizza of any kind.


Kelly Warren Kelly Warren

Kelly has a strong background in the arts, academics, athletics and community volunteering. The chief organizer of St. John’s 2nd Underground Independent Arts show, Undie Art Show, Kelly received a NIFCO grant to develop a short documentary on the meaning behind the popular logo and former local popular graffiti "Free NL." Kelly also volunteers with Devon House Clay Studio at their Open Studio Hours and currently works part time with local fashion and costume designer Charlotte Reid at Charlottestreet Designs. A talented piano player and stone drummer, Kelly is also a Life Saving Society Swimming Instructor and Examiner, triathlete, high school rugby coach, hula-hooper and newfound vegetarian. Kelly is currently working towards completing both a Bachelor of Science and Arts degree at Memorial University.


Brent Warren Brent Warren

A Memorial University student in his second term at Memorial University, Brent is an avid reader and astute observer. Brent’s strong interest in the performing arts includes watching plays, going to exhibitions, spontaneous break-dancing and exploring new music. An experienced paint ball player, snowboarder and carpenter, Brent is also well read and cites The Catcher in the Rye and The Art of War as among his favourite reads to date. Brent's future plans are to get a degree in Education from Memorial University and one day become a teacher.


Jackie Whitten Jackie Whitten

Along with being a darn good academic, Jackie has been know to wear the hats of Director, Dancer, Host and Actor. A member of Kittiwake Dance Theatre for nearly a decade, Jackie has taught Acting and Mime at Kittiwake to other youth for the last two years. A former Executive Member of Holy Heart of Mary High School’s Film Club, Jackie has also co-directed Lucy, winner of the 2006 National Screen Arts Student Festival and directed the Holy Heart Drama Club’s production of Dress Rehearsal for Murder. Her acting resume includes A Game which won best ensemble performance in this year's Dramafest. Jackie was also the co-host of this year's National Screen Arts Student Festival. Jackie enjoys people, Latin, hip hop, quick-wit and breakdancing.


Stephen Williams Stephen Williams

Clearly saving the best for last ("Who me?" responds Steve), Stephen hasn't found himself onstage since his days at Mount Pearl Senior High. Nevertheless, friend and Homeless Like Me production manager Tracy Flood recognized the stardust in Stephen, given his impeccable and hilarious impromptu impressions of virtually any and everyone and regular ham-it-up routines and invited him to try out for the cast of Homeless Like Me. As with everything he does, Stephen brings a polish to his role in the performance and claims to be having "the time of his life trying attracting attention to himself on stage."

Stephen has always called Newfoundland and Labrador his home, despite a recent stint in Halifax to get educated. He is currently learning how to be a best man for his brother's wedding and is also starting to fret about his own upcoming nuptials.
