SUBMISSIONS SOUGHT FROM YOUNG NL WRITERS AND ARTISTS.

Young NL writers and artists have another opportunity to get their work published. For the Love of Learning, Inc is seeking submissions for its as yet untitled fifth anthology of fiction and art. All of For the Love of learning’s previous publications have been for sale through local retailers, offering exposure to the young authors and artists.

Young writer Mark Howard had his first published piece, a short story, appear in the non-profit’s previous anthology, ‘the puffins told me so’. “Having my writing chosen showed me that the work was worth publishing and showing to people. It gave me confidence that I would not have gained by myself.”

Up-and-coming writers and artists aged 15-35 are encouraged to submit material. Submissions can be poetry and stories (up to 500 words), as well as illustrations in the form of sketches, paintings or photographs. All work should be submitted to peterhynes@fortheloveoflearning.org or the above postal address by January 14, 2011. If possible, an e-mail address should be included with all submissions.

As well, free creative writing and art classes are regularly offered at For the Love of Learning’s drop-in centre, located in the basement gym of Gower United Church.

“There’s a great deal of unrecognized creative talent in our province,” says founder and Executive/Artistic Director Robin Grant, “and we’re determined to showcase as much of that as possible.”

2010 LITERACY AWARD GOES TO ROBIN GRANT.

Canada’s Premiers today announced that the NL recipient of the 6th annual Council of the Federation Literacy Award is FTLOL founder and Exec Director Robin Grant.

Robin believes too many individuals are being held back by a lack of education and literacy, through circumstances often beyond their control. The development of reading and writing skills is an integral part of For the Love of Learning’s curriculum.

Robin said, “The award really recognizes the young people who did the work improving their literacy skills. Everything, from teaching individuals, to those we publish and mentor at For the Love of Learning, honestly, it means little if they’re not willing to make it happen for themselves.”

The COF Literacy Award is presented in each province and territory and recognizes outstanding contributions made by Canadians across the field of literacy. Each recipient receives a certificate signed by their Premier and a medallion.

Filmmaker Gerry Rogers hosts 'My Left Breast' screening at FTLOL.

On July 21, acclaimed local filmmaker Gerry Rogers visited For the Love of Learning’s drop-in centre, to screen her award-winning documentary ‘My Left Breast’ and speak to the participants of FTLOL’s filmmaking class about her life, work and process.

‘My Left Breast’ , which won two Gemini Awards, is a stark and fearless journey through one woman’s bout with cancer. For the Love of Learning and its young participants are very grateful for the unique opportunity to view and discuss the film with its subject and creator.

Support FTLOL through Ever Green Recycling.

There’s a way you can help keep FTLOL’s free workshops and projects for local youth going, all while being environmentally conscious.

Any recyclables brought to Ever Green Recycling that are earmarked for ‘For the Love of Learning’ will have the proceeds go directly to support our programs. When you first go in, just let the good folks at Ever Green know that the proceeds from your recyclables are to be set aside for the us.

Please call 722-8848 or email whatsup@fortheloveoflearning.org for more information. And thanks, as always, for your interest and support.
