FOR THE LOVE OF LEARNING'S CODE OF ETHICS

SECTION A: General
- Youth Mentors [to include all employees, volunteers and board members] are expected to nurture an environment of unconditional positive regard for all members at For the Love of Learning Inc.

- Youth Mentors have a responsibility to promote an atmosphere of respect and a sense of
belonging. That is, all walks of life between and including the ages of 15-35 are welcome at For the Love of Learning Inc. Any biases based on an individual’s education, religion, mental health,
sexual orientation, gender, race, language, intelligence, physical health, and so on, will be
considered a direct disregard to this code and be considered cause for dismissal.

- Youth Mentors have a responsibility to promote a safe haven for all. That is, only constructive
criticism will be tolerated in the workshops. In addition, verbal and/or physical abuse in the group
setting will not be tolerated. All disagreements are to be brought to the Management Staff and
dealt with privately away from the youth.

- Youth Mentors are role models. Therefore, youth mentors are strictly prohibited from engaging in
at-risk behaviour with the population we serve. That is, youth mentors may not engage in drinking
alcohol, doing drugs or having sexual relations with any of the youth members of this organization.

- Youth Mentors must agree to deal with the information they learn in appropriate and confidential matters, unless he or she believes a human being is in imminent danger (defined generally by physical harm to self or others) or the organization is somehow in jeopardy. That is, all matters discussed at For the Love of Learning Inc. that are of a business or personal nature shall remain with the people discussed, unless the situation meets the criteria mentioned above. In this case, the Management Staff and/or a member(s) of the board should be informed immediately.

- Youth Mentors are to keep any personal problems to themselves. That is to say, in order to
promote a safe haven for the youth psychologically, it is vital that they not feel more than normal concern or empathy for the youth mentors. Conversely, if a youth discloses to a youth mentor the youth mentor may be as warm and accepting or closed as their personality and well being permits.

- Youth Mentors may not lend or borrow items belonging to herself or himself, the company or a
youth member unless this item/these items have received prior approval from the Management
Staff and a written record has been maintained.

- Youth Mentors must insure that they do not engage in activities which might lead to the misuse of their influence in the organization or with youth members.

- Youth Mentors must not engage in activities that seek to meet their personal or professional needs
at the expense or exploitation of a youth member.

- Youth Mentors do not condone or engage in sexual harassment, which is defined as unwanted
comments, gestures, or physical contact of a sexual nature.

- Youth Mentors are to be aware of the impact of stereotyping and unwarranted discrimination
(based on age, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and so on) and are
expected to be sensitive to the personal dignity and individual rights of the youth members.

- Youth Mentors are to be accountable for their behaviour at all times. They must be aware that all
actions and behaviours of the youth mentors reflects on the professional integrity and, when
inappropriate, can damage the public trust in For the Love of Learning Inc. To protect public
confidence in the organization, Youth Mentors are advised to avoid behaviour that is clearly in
violation of accepted moral and legal standards.

- Products or services provided by Youth Mentors by means of classroom instruction, public
lectures, demonstrations, written articles, radio or television programs or other types of media
must meet the criteria cited in this code.

- Youth Mentors have an obligation to withdraw from the practice of mentoring if they violate the
Code of Ethics, or if the mental or physical condition of the Youth Mentor renders it unlikely that a professional relationship will be maintained.

- Ethical behaviour among Youth Mentors must be expected at all times. When a youth mentor has
doubts as to the ethical behaviour of colleagues, the youth mentor must take action to attempt to
rectify this condition. The Youth Mentor would be expected to contact a member of the board
and/or the Management Staff on this regard.

- Youth Mentors have a responsibility to the clients they serve and to the institutions within which
the services are performed. The acceptance of internship and/or employment with
For the Love of Learning, Inc implies that the Youth Mentor is in agreement with the general policies and principles of the institution. Therefore, the professional activities of the Youth Mentor are in accord with the objectives of the organization. If the Youth Mentor and the organization do not
agree and cannot reach agreement on policies that are consistent with appropriate ethical practices that are conducive to the growth and development of youth members, the internship or
employment will be terminated. If the situation warrants further action, the Youth Mentor must
work through the appropriate channels of the organization to ensure that the unethical practice
is changed.
